Mint condition pair of signed 2004 Sal Alcaraz art glass lamps

Offered is a Danish modern drum-base Teak wood table lamp. The base is heavy and sturdy, carved from a single piece of teak. The hardware is nickel-plated stainless steel, and the shade appears to be original off-white/light beige textured linen, lined appropriately. This piece appears to be the design of German American industrial designer Walter von Nessen, whose Nessen Studios was commissioned by numerous architects and builders for their modernist lighting needs.

From the Nessen Lighting website:
“From the outset, his designs were the foremost examples of the modern trend. The progression of von Nessen’s designs range from the German Deco of the Early 20’s to American Deco of the mid-20’s to the functionalism which dominated his work until his death in 1943. By combining functionalism with new materials, he helped establish a new design vocabulary.

He had relatively little competition. With the exception of Walter Kantack, an architect who focused on the design of large-scale bronze lamps for building applications, von Nessen was the only major designer who concentrated on innovative contemporary residential lighting.

Von Nessen’s goal was to produce efficient lighting-lighting that would meet his exacting standards of correct illumination. To do this, he developed manufacturing techniques for a variety of non-traditional materials: brass with satin chrome, spun aluminum, bake-lite, fiberglass, natural cherrywood, rosewood, to name a few. Throughout, he concentrated on indirect illumination, new materials and finishes, and details such as revolving and adjustable parts.”

A little history lesson first …

At some point in time during the 1700s, it was discovered that sperm whale oil burned more brightly and clearly than the oil from other whales, and sperm whale oil did not have the offensive odor that other whale oils had; so it was preferred. But by the mid-1800s the whaling industry was beginning to see a decline; and by 1859 petroleum was discovered. That discovery, along with the onset of the Civil War, brought the industry to an end by the late 1800s/1900s. The old whale oil lamps were easily converted from burning whale oil to kerosene and then later to electricity.

Offered here is a beautiful late 1800s glass whale oil style table lamp. (It comes with a harp – I just had to remove the harp so I could get this into my light box for photographing. Harp is shown next to the lamp in first photo). No shade or bulb included. The glass itself is a sky blue color that has a cut to clear design. The design is actually cut into the glass on a wheel – not pressed glass. The design depicts a grapevine with leaves all the way around. There are oval spots cut all the way around above the grapevine, and elongated fat vertical stripes cut all the way around below the grapevine. No chips, cracks, or unusual wear in the glass.

The brass parts of this lamp have been cleaned, but not polished. The base is made of marble. The electrical parts are in good shape and work.

Marble base measures 5″ X 5″. No chips or cracks in the marble base, but it could benefit from a polishing. With the harp in place, measures about 21 5/8″ tall. No finial for the top of the harp is included.

To reiterate: No shade, bulb, or finial are included. An absolutely lovely piece of history.

A very elegant pair of French 19th century Louis XVI style electrified brass candelabra lamps. The lamps are raised by a circular stepped base with a lovely wrap around foliage on a torchiere with center flame.
Each scrolled arms are adorned with accanthus leaf motif and delicate beaded bobeshes.
Each candelabra has a switch on and off on the electrical cord.

Mid 20th century bankers desk lamp in brass with the interior of the adjustable shade being in white enamel, unsigned original wiring.

A pair of blue and white Chinese Export lamps sitting on 18 karat gold bases. The blue lamps are beautifully decorated with white branches, leaves and flowers. A stunning pair of chinoiserie table lamps. Shades sold separately.

Dramatically hand painted floor lamp with solid brass base and lamp fittings. All new wiring and new shade. Brass fittings have been newly polished and lacquered. The lamp measures 12′ X 12′ at the base and is 62.25″ tall as shown with extensions to raise shade. The shade measures 19.75″ X 11″. Very fine condition.
