Circa 1920 Art Nouveau-Inspired Porcelain Nude Nymph Flower Frog, Germany

Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.

This flower frog shape was immensely popular in the 1920s, with many originating in eastern Europe, especially Germany. Though Cowan Pottery, in the United States, was also a prolific producer of nude nymph flower frogs. This type of flower frog was typically found in the center of a console bowl, which were quite popular during this era. The flower frog shape has both an art nouveau and art deco influence. While most were made from white porcelain with a highly glazed finish, this beauty’s white porcelain against a colorful backdrop of a floral garland and paneled vase is atypical and quite lovely. It measures 7½” x 4” x 2½” H/W/D; weight 8 oz. Nude nymph is made from white porcelain with a highly glazed finish. The floral garland colors are dusty blue, pale yellow and muted persimmon; paneled base has an ombre pale yellow to pale violet coloring. In excellent condition with minimal age-appropriate wear. There is one miniscule speck on upper part of the right breast as a result of the manufacturing process (please review all photos), which does not affect its beauty or utility. It is not uncommon in older porcelain and is due to iron particles in the clay used to make the porcelain. Older clay had tiny amounts of iron residue in the mix. Over long periods of time, the iron works its way to the surface and one sees a black speck. It is said that those are actually brown because it is oxidized iron or rust. They appear black because they are so tiny. It was made in Germany and you will see this on the underside along with a number but no actual makers hallmark. For a collector of unique flower frogs, this beauty should be a must!
